Did you know that to change the occupancy type of a building (in our case, from office space to retail + food service) you have to submit a full set of architectural and engineering drawings to the city?
And that if you’re making more than a “fist-sized hole in the wall,” you also need a demolition permit?
And that even just a little coffee shop needs a grease trap?
And do you know how much plumbers cost??
I sure didn’t. But I do now.
I truly appreciate and respect the work our city and county do to keep us safe and healthy. And I even more appreciate the work of tradespeople. But, man, this can all make things pretty tough!
I started telling people we’d be open by early February. That’s come and gone. Now I’m looking at the middle of March, but even that could get pushed back. Here’s where things stand:
- We’ve applied for all permits (we think) and our applications are under review with the city.
- I have an electrician and plumber lined up and ready to start work.
- All coffee shop equipment and materials are here and ready to be installed.
- Once our permits are approved and work starts, I’ll order coffee, tea, and all other supplies.
- And we’ll be ready to open!
And here’s what you can expect… I’ll have a “soft open” period with limited hours as soon as possible. I won’t make a big deal out of it, but if you keep on eye on our social media pages, you’ll be in the loop.
During the soft open period, I’ll have an exclusive pre-open event just for “Founding Members.” (This is still TBD — if you have thoughts, let me know!)
Once everything is running smoothly, we’ll have a grand opening event. My goal is for it to include a few local partners, maybe some music, and hopefully some literary events — readings, open mics, who knows!
In the meantime, if you haven’t already, consider buying a membership. This is the best way to support us pre-open, and you get some great perks in return. (And a kickass membership card.)

Thank you for your support and for following along in this journey! I can’t wait to welcome you in.
